  Listings Guide and Index

The Market Movements website provides a detailed listing of the stamps of Great Britain from 1840 to date together with an estimate their current market values based on dealers' actual selling prices.  For ease of access, the data is divided into thirteen Sections as listed in the table below.

The listings provide the calculated average price for each stamp based on the selling prices from a range of sources including dealers price lists, advertisements, stamp fairs, and auctions.  The listings show these average prices, not the data from which they were calculated.  Specific sources of the data are not listed.

Stamp and watermark illustrations are provided and cover most stamps up to the end of the reign of George VI.  Thereafter, illustrations of definitives are provided, but the large number of commemorative issues during the reign of Elizabeth II means that this reign has not been fully illustrated.

For typical examples of the data provided, click on the link below to the the Free Tour:

Values of stamps are provided for five main conditions - Unmounted Mint (U/M), Mounted Mint (M/M), Very Fine Used (VFU), Fine Used (FU) and Average Used (Av U).  Not all conditions have been valued for all stamps  -  in some cases dealers seldom offer stamps in that condition (Av U for example, for modern lower value stamps).  For definitions of these conditions see the Grading definitions.  For more modern issues, prices are also provided for first day covers, presentation packs, and PHQ cards.

The listings are sub-divided into Sections based on monarchs' reigns.  The stamp conditions covered under each monarch are as shown in the table below.

Dealers’ descriptions of the condition of stamps vary considerably and in some cases judgement has been required by Market-Movements in ascribing the value.  For example, what might be termed ‘very fine used’ by one dealer may be only ‘fine used’ to another.  Wherever possible, this is taken into account when assessing the value of a stamp.

    What is not covered?
At present the listings do not cover regional issues, stamp booklets, postage dues, watermark varieties (inverted, sideways, reversed) or overprints.  In addition, prices for some early Victorian unmounted mint have been omitted due to the difficulty in calculating realistic average prices.  This is explained further in the Explanatory Notes within Section 1.

How often are the prices updated?

The monitoring process is continuous, and all sources of data are reviewed on a rotational basis and updated regularly. Generally, no data older than 6 months is used in calculating the averages, and most is much more recent than that.  This ensures that the values quoted are as up-to-date as possible and representative of current market conditions.

    How are the values calculated?
Approximately 50 different sources of data have been used in compiling these values.  Not all dealers sell every stamp issue, but each price calculation is based on typically between 5 and 20 sources.  In some cases the actual number is less than this, especially where stamps are not commonly offered for sale in a particular condition e.g. early Victorian mint.  In cases where there are insufficient examples to calculate a realistic average value, Market-Movements has put in an estimated value based on our knowledge of the market, and this has been indicated in the listings by displaying the price in italics. This mainly applies to some early Victorian mint, some George VI and early QE2 definitive first day covers and presentation packs, and some recent used PHQ cards.
